16.20 - 16.50
Inside Out: Realizing the Sculptural Façade of the Gilder Center

The Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation is the latest addition to New York’s historic American Museum of Natural History. The new building creates new physical and visual connections that encourage visitors to explore the exhibitions within and to share the excitement of scientific discovery and learning about the natural world. Conceived from the inside-out, the architecture also greatly improves visitor experience throughout the museum by seamlessly embedding within the existing campus. This talk will discuss how the façade’s distinctive form emerged from the design concept, with the building’s shotcrete structure extending outward to support the building’s stone cladding. Through close collaboration between architects, engineers, fabricators and installers, the design team utilized advanced digital workflows to translate the vision of continuous curvature into buildable components. Lessons learned from this project provide valuable insights for realizing innovative architectural geometries.
